Many of you will remember last year’s hilarious blockbuster hit, ‘The Hangover’ which was an awesome film, but also featured a memorable car. Remember the 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE that the guys drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and ended up trashing it while on their adventure? Now, around Chicago, C-Class wagon drivers among others will have a chance to get their hands on this piece of pop culture.
Cinema Vehicles of North Hollywood, the design shop that built the 280 SE for ‘The Hangover’ is putting the 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE up on eBay for the highest bidder to take home. In total, four vehicles were built for the movie, with two being involved in the stunt work and consequently being totaled, while the two others were preserved. The vehicle currently on sale is one of those two that were obviously not destroyed.
Around Chicago, C-Class wagon drivers kept wondering whether or not it was a real convertible or if it was modified for the film. It turns out, the top of the original car was actually cut off and the back of the car was covered with a soft top cover, giving the illusion that it is a real convertible, but in fact, it was just built to look like one.
In Chicago, Mercedes G 500 fans may recall that the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE was produced for only a limited time, between 1965 and 1972, with fewer than 100,000 vehicles produced. The rarity of this model vehicle should be enough to garner customers’ attention, not to add the immense popularity of ‘The Hangover’.
So while it would be great to own a pretty rare Mercedes 280 SE and have an awesome piece of memorabilia from this film, from a driver standpoint, I would hesitate to bid on this car especially if I’m planning on driving it summers in Chicago. Mercedes G 500 fans have to agree with me that the fact that it has an inoperable top due to it not being a “real” convertible is a deal breaker. I think I’ll pass on this one, but I may just go out and rent ‘The Hangover’ to watch one more time and keep an eye out for the 280 SE!
